Aujourd’hui c’est vendredi, et comme toutes les semaines, voici Vendredi c’est Graphism, la chronique graphisme, design, art et technologies de la création sur Owni.fr ! Au programme de cette semaine, du pixel en volume, du recyclage numérique, un jeu de société pour graphistes, des petits cubes virtuels qui rencontre l’univers des studios Ghibli, un doigt d’honneur pour soutenir un artiste Chinois, un long métrage sur Matrix et un WTF…mortel !

C’est parti ! On commence la semaine avec la combinaison entre le pixel et la 3D. Egalement appelé «Voxel» ce système est une façon passionnante de représenter de l’image en pixels. Le travail de Shawn Smith va plus loin et étudie l’intersection glissante entre le monde numérique et la réalité. Plus encore, il tente de comprendre comment nous percevons la nature grâce à la technologie.

Partant du constat que les images de la nature présentée à la télévision ou sur un écran d’ordinateur ne sont en fait que de la lumière pixelisée (la trame télévisuelle en RVB), Smith recrée ainsi en trois dimensions des représentations sculpturales de ces images en deux dimensions.

C’est l’idée du jour, il s’agit du recyclage numérique ! Dumpster Drive est une application de partage de fichiers qui recycle des fichiers numériques. L’utilisation de déchets “nobles” pour en faire des créations, pour les recycler, pour leur redonner vie existe déjà avec les matériaux physiques. Et c’est sur ce même modèle que Dumpster Drive permet aux autres d’aller piocher dans votre “poubelle” dans les fichiers que vous supprimez sur votre ordinateur. Cela permet ainsi aux utilisateurs d’étendre le cycle de vie de leurs fichiers indésirables et de les transmettre à d’autres.

On enchaîne notre revue de la semaine avec un jeu de plateau pour graphistes & designers ! Intitulé «The Pitch», le mélange tombe parfaitement avec un équilibre entre graphisme et jeu de société. À l’heure actuelle, le projet en est à son stade de recherche de financements avec Kickstarter mais voici déjà les premiers principes.

Le concept: Tous les grands projets commencent par une chose: une bonne idée. Cette idée est la racine de toutes les créations. Penser le beau produit, imaginer la représentation d’une marque, réfléchir à l’auditoire, etc. En tant que designers, nous avons la capacité d’influencer le monde.

L’objectif: Communiquer les prémisses du graphisme et le rendre accessible à tous, en particulier aux non-graphistes, aux non-designers. L’idée est également de rassembler une communauté, de collaborer et d’inventer.

Le projet: Autour du jeu, chacun peut devenir designer, et rentrer dans la « pensée design ». Votre jeune frère, votre grand-mère qui ne peut pas cliquer sur une souris d’ordinateur ou de votre meilleur ami peuvent alors mettre en route une réflexion orientée design et amorcer un processus créatif.

La séquence “émotion” de cette semaine, j’aurais pu également la placer dans “art de geek” tellement la prouesse est impressionnante. Il s’agit de la reconstruction entière dans MineCraft des décors des différents animés des Studio Ghibli avec notamment les décors de “Mon Voisin Totoro”, “Laputa” ou encore “le Voyage de Chihiro”. C’est assez impressionnant, vraiment :-)

Hier, mes amis du FAT (free art & technology) qui ont présenté sur leur site un lien à glisser sur vos pages de sites internet. Il s’agit du bookmark “Fuck Off” pour soutenir l’artiste contemporain Ai Weiei qui lutte pour la liberté d’expression en Chine. C’est en apparence idiot, drôle, ça ne sert, à proprement parler, pas à grand chose si ce n’est à faire du fun, ça se teste directement ici.

Il y a quelques jours, Raphaël Hernandez et Savitri Joly-Gonfard ont sorti Kaydara, le fan-film inspiré de Matrix. Cette production française, d’une durée de 50 minutes réalisée pendant plus de 6 ans raconte l’histoire de Kaydara, un chasseur de prime dont la mission est de tuer l’élu ! Vous l’aurez compris, un film dans la veine matrix qui possède des scènes à couper le souffle !

Le gros gros WTF du jour s’appelle “Euthanasia Coaster” ! Ce manège de l’euthanasie est une machine polémique et hypothétique pour provoquer la mort sous la forme d’un roller coaster. Conçu, je cite, “pour que l’être humain perde vie avec élégance et euphorie”, le passager est soumis à une série de sensations uniques: de l’euphorie à l’hypnose, à la perte de conscience, et, éventuellement, la mort. Cette idée totalement “WTF” est réalisé par Julijonas Urbonas et Paulius Vitkauskas.

I’ve got to admit I was never a fan of Norman Wisdom, pratfalls and mugging not being my thing. But then again … there was something interesting about his whole screen persona and his amazing success.

Was he a trailblazer for freedom of expression? Did he represent liberty versus establishment authoritarianism? Hmmm. Charlie Chaplin, George Formby, Michael Crawford’s “Frank Spencer” (!), and Norman Wisdom’s “Norman Pitkin”.

Apparently with Wisdom it was actually more than a screen construct. According to Wikipedia, when he was working in a telephone centre during the Second World War he came into regular contact with Winston Churchill and was once reprimanded for cheekily calling him “Winnie”. Nice.

I can even see an echo of Wisdom’s “Gump” character – tight, rumpled suit jacket and mangled tie – in the archetypal punk look (Johnny Rotten, Richard Hell). Maybe punk’s anti-establishment postures unconsciously took something from comic rebels like Norman Pitkin. (Please discuss…).

And then there’s the famous matter of his popularity in Stalinist countries like Albania and China. Obviously “physical” comedians like “Mr Bean” and Benny Hill have always travelled well, but with Norman Wisdom the adoption of the lovable rebel figure in authoritarian countries was also political. He supposedly represented something “acceptable” to Communist rulers about the supposedly corrupt, bourgeois West.

Which is all deeply ironic. Albania would apparently allow only his films from the non-Communist world to be shown in the country. Everything else was banned.

Present-day authoritarian countries are notoriously selective about what they will and won’t allow their populations to watch, write about or do. For example, in Syria a 19-year-old blogger called Tal al-Mallohi has been in prison without charge or trial since last year apparently because the authorities are enraged by her poetry and other online musings which contain references to Syria’s draconian restrictions on freedom of expression (see her blog: Arabic only).

There are new reports that she is being held on “espionage” grounds. We’ll see. Please, meanwhile, take action for Tal here.

Syria has a nasty record of jailing people who dare to voice forbidden topics online – people like Kareem ‘Arabji, a blogger jailed last year for moderating an internet youth forum (he’s since been amnestied), and people like ‘Allam Fakhour, Ayham Saqr, Diab Siriyeh, Hussam ‘Ali Mulhim, Maher Isber Ibrahim, ‘Omar ‘Ali al-‘Abdullah and Tareq al-Ghorani – all of whom have been sentenced to long prison sentences for their part in developing an online youth discussion group and publishing online articles advocating democratic reform. Please take action for these men here.

I somehow doubt whether Tal al-Mallohi and her fellow Syrian detainees have watched many Norman Wisdom films. But if they ever do, I reckon they’d get a glimpse of what Syria is trying to suppress.

The OpenNet Initiative and Reporters Without Borders – in collaboration with Internet World Stats and Wolfram Alpha – released their annual report illustrating the governments which apply a “pervasive and substantial level” of internet censorship on their web users. The outcome is astonishing: at one time or another, 1.72 billion people have been potentially subject to online censorship. This figure equates to 25.3% of the global population.

According to Reporters Without Borders China, Vietnam, Iran, Syria, Egypt and Burma (Myanmar) are the countries in which censorship is applied as a form of repression against political opponents. Just as an example, 72 people have been imprisoned in China alone due to subversive activities within the online sphere.The arrest figures are still worrying in countries like Vietnam (17) Iran (13), Syria (4) Egypt and Burma (2). No data is available for North Korea.

In the 21st century panorama, it is increasingly clear that web freedom is inversely proportional to the despotic nature of a given government. According to another RSF report – “Living Dangerously on the net” published in 2003, China employed around 30000 civil servants with the sole purpose of policing internet providers. It is safe to say that seven years later this number has likely grown exponentially. Around 10,000 websites are restricted and the figures are set to rise.
In a response to the numerous accusations – possibly head-started by the withdrawal of Google at the beginning of this year – the Chinese government published a white paper on June 8 this year explaining and defending such strict control over online content and activities as a matter of national security.

In a move against this worrying trend, Reporters Sans Frontières has also announced on June 29 that it will open an “anti-censorship” shelter within Paris in partnership with the communications security firm XeroBank, which will feature an encryption software able to circumvent censorship , and will be connected online through an anonimity network. RSF also has plans to launch a website which will host any banned content, reminiscent of Wikileaks, the whistleblower portal lead by australian former hacker Julian Assange, that has been causing havoc for releasing confidential information on US army actions in Iraq, as well as private emails belonging to Sarah Palin’s personal account. An RSF spokesperson said

At a time when online filtering and surveillance is becoming more and more widespread, we are making an active commitment to an internet that is unrestricted and accessible to all by providing the victims of censorship with the means of protecting their online information
